An intramuscular injection places a small, concentrated dose deep into a well-supplied muscle — usually the upper arm, the hip or the thigh. From there it is absorbed through the muscle’s blood vessels into the circulation, without having to survive digestion first.

Your goal, history, medication and allergies. If persistent tiredness suggests an underlying cause — iron, thyroid or vitamin B12 or D levels — we look for it with a blood test rather than injecting over it.

The doctor prescribes the right shot and dose for you, and recommends how often — if at all — to repeat it.

The skin is cleaned and the shot is given into the upper arm, hip or thigh with a sterile, single-use needle. A brief sting, and it is done.

No recovery time. Mild soreness at the site can last a day; a gentle stretch or walk helps.

Biotin (vitamin B7), found in many B-complex and hair-skin-nail products, can interfere with some laboratory tests — including thyroid, hormone and cardiac troponin tests — and give falsely high or low results. If you have received or are taking biotin, tell your doctor and the laboratory before any blood test.

An intramuscular injection: a small, concentrated dose of vitamins placed into a muscle — usually the upper arm, hip or thigh — and absorbed through its blood vessels into the circulation.
A shot takes a few minutes and delivers one or a few nutrients in a small volume. An IV drip takes around 40 minutes and adds hydration and larger, multi-ingredient formulas. Many patients use shots between drips.
A brief sting, then usually some mild soreness for a day. Relaxing the muscle and moving the arm or leg afterwards helps.
It depends on the booster and on why you are having it. Your doctor recommends a frequency at your review — some patients use a shot occasionally before a demanding week, others on a regular schedule.
Sometimes it helps; often tiredness has a cause worth finding, such as low iron, thyroid problems, poor sleep or low vitamin B12 or D. If fatigue is persistent, a blood test may be the right first step, and we will tell you so.
